The same product serves three discovery behaviors
Take a Shopify product page for a brown leather Chelsea boot.
A search query might be men's brown Chelsea boots. A direct-answer query might ask whether the boot is waterproof. A generative shopping request might ask for brown office boots under $220 that work for wide feet and wet commutes.
The product page does not need three versions. It needs a strong discovery foundation, answerable facts, and evidence that can survive comparison.
SEO: make the page discoverable
SEO covers crawl access, indexable content, internal links, canonical URLs, useful titles, and relevance to a search query. It also includes site quality, authority, and user experience.
For the Chelsea boot, the page should have a stable URL, a descriptive title, links from the correct collection, and no accidental robots block.
Without this foundation, AEO and GEO tactics have little to work with.
AEO: make the facts answerable
AEO focuses on direct questions:
- Is it waterproof?
- Does it come in wide sizes?
- What is the upper material?
- Can the sole be replaced?
Answers should appear in clear text, tables, headings, or well-structured product fields. Shopify metafields can keep recurring attributes consistent.
Product schema can expose standard properties such as brand, SKU, offers, and availability. It is not a substitute for visible explanations.
GEO: make the product supportable in a generated response
GEO looks beyond one fact. A generative system may combine the official product page, collection context, policies, manuals, reputable coverage, and buyer reviews.
The merchant-controlled work includes:
- stable product and brand identity
- consistent facts across first-party pages and feeds
- evidence for performance or compatibility claims
- clear limitations
- canonical sources worth citing
GEO does not mean adding a paragraph written by an AI. It means reducing uncertainty across the evidence a system may use.
Use a shared task map
| Store task | SEO | AEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|---|
| canonical product URL | foundation | supports stable answer source | supports citation identity |
| descriptive attributes | supports relevance | supplies direct answers | supports comparisons |
| Product JSON-LD | machine understanding | standard facts | consistency signal |
| product feed | shopping discovery | current offer facts | platform-specific evidence |
| policies and manuals | site quality | answers conditions | supports verification |
The boundaries are not absolute. The terms describe priorities, not separate switches.
What changes for the merchant
Keyword research remains useful, but it is joined by buyer-question research. Product copy must include exclusions as well as benefits. Catalog operations become part of discoverability because price, stock, identifiers, and variants influence whether a product can be accurately presented.
The practical starting point is the 15-minute AI visibility check.
