The old funnel is not disappearing

Buyers still use search engines, social media, marketplaces, email, and direct visits. AI-assisted shopping adds another path: a buyer describes the problem, an assistant asks follow-up questions, compares candidates, and may send the buyer to a merchant or support checkout inside the conversation.

The important change is that one request can contain many constraints.

Stage 1: discovery

The buyer asks for a category or solution. Systems may use a search index, public web pages, a commerce catalog, or a platform-specific product feed.

A merchant can fail here because the product is not eligible, the page is blocked, the category is wrong, or the product identity is too vague.

Stage 2: clarification

The assistant asks about budget, use case, size, location, compatibility, or preferences. This turns broad discovery into an attribute query.

For a mattress, the decisive attributes may include firmness, sleeping position, dimensions, material, trial period, and delivery region. A poetic description cannot replace them.

Stage 3: comparison

Candidates must be placed into a common frame. That requires comparable facts.

Candidate Firmness Trial Material Delivery
product A medium 100 nights hybrid stated
product B absent 365 nights “premium” unclear

Product B is difficult to compare even if its page looks better.

Stage 4: verification

The system may check the official page, policy pages, reviews, documentation, or third-party sources. Entity consistency means the brand, product name, identifiers, and key facts align across those sources.

Conflicting stock or dimensions create risk. A clear correction on the canonical product page is more valuable than duplicating the same claim across low-quality articles.

Stage 5: transaction

Some experiences link to the store; others support cart and checkout integrations. At this point, current Offer data, currency, inventory, shipping, payment, and merchant eligibility matter.

This is why agentic commerce is not only a content trend. It connects product information to transaction infrastructure.

Where to focus first

Mark one product against the five stages. Fix the earliest failed stage. Do not spend time on recommendation copy if the product is absent from the relevant catalog or its page cannot be retrieved.
