Preserve the answer first
Save prompt, timestamp, platform, locale, answer, source URLs, named competitors, and provider state. Do not rewrite the page before knowing why each competitor qualified.
Build a constraint matrix
For a doorbell query:
| Constraint | Your page | Competitor page |
|---|---|---|
| battery operation | explicit/unknown | explicit/unknown |
| 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi | ||
| no wiring required | ||
| subscription qualification | ||
| official source cited |
Ring’s public page supports all four product constraints. A page saying only “smart security made easy” does not.
Diagnose five causes
- wrong or weak product category
- decisive facts absent from text
- price/stock conflict reduces reliability
- third-party sources have stronger comparison evidence
- completed answer simply selected another eligible product
The fifth outcome is not a technical defect.
Repair order
- correct category and canonical identity
- publish missing constraints and exclusions
- align visible and structured offers
- add internal links from category/evidence pages
- rerun the same prompt after recrawl
Do not do this
Do not copy competitor wording, create fake comparisons, or publish “best” claims without evidence. Do not report one answer as market share.
Acceptance criteria
Every remediation maps to an observed missing or conflicting field. The after-test uses the same prompt and reports correlation, not guaranteed causation.
