The short answer

ChatGPT now combines web research with documented product feeds and commerce flows, while Claude's public merchant relevance centers on web search, citations, and API-built retail assistants.

The platforms overlap, but the merchant paths differ

Both ChatGPT and Claude can use web information and cite sources in supported modes. Both can compare products. The important difference is the currently documented commerce infrastructure.

Capability ChatGPT / OpenAI Claude / Anthropic
current web research supported supported
visible citations supported in relevant modes supported with web search
public product-feed specification OpenAI Commerce documents one no equivalent public merchant feed found
public checkout specification OpenAI Commerce documents checkout no equivalent public merchant checkout found
retailer-built assistant via API possible possible

Sources: OpenAI Commerce, OpenAI Shopping Research, and Claude web search.

What stays the same

Both systems benefit from:

  • canonical public product pages
  • explicit comparison attributes
  • current price and availability
  • clear limitations
  • stable brand and product identity
  • supporting policies and documentation

This is the shared AEO and GEO foundation.

What differs operationally

For ChatGPT, a merchant may also need to understand OpenAI product data, Shopify Catalog distribution, and supported checkout paths.

For Claude, the merchant should focus on web-search access and source quality unless building a custom retail assistant with the Claude API. There is no basis for claiming that a Shopify metafield is automatically “submitted to Claude.”

Measure separately

Use the same buyer intent, but do not expect identical answers. Record the mode, market, sources, products, and errors for each platform.

Avoid a combined “AI score” that hides whether one platform used a feed and another used public web results.

Merchant decision

Maintain one high-quality product source, then manage platform-specific distribution separately. Do not create contradictory “ChatGPT copy” and “Claude copy.” The product’s facts should remain the same.
