The official capability

Anthropic introduced web search for Claude in March 2025 and expanded it across Claude plans. Anthropic explicitly describes shopping research as a use case: comparing product features, prices, and reviews across sources, with citations.

Source: Claude can now search the web.

What this means for a product page

Claude can use current public sources when web search is active. A Shopify page therefore needs to do more than be technically accessible. It must give Claude a source worth using.

For an electronics comparison, publish:

  • exact model and revision
  • supported devices and operating systems
  • port standards
  • power requirements
  • included accessories
  • tested limitations
  • current price and availability

These facts should be visible and connected to the canonical product URL.

Search access and answer evidence are different

Anthropic documents Claude-SearchBot, Claude-User, and ClaudeBot for different purposes. Robots policy can affect intended access, but a successful page request does not prove that Claude searched, cited, or recommended it.

Use the Claude crawler guide for those controls.

Run a useful observation

Ask a constraint-heavy, unbranded question:

Compare compact USB-C docks that support Ethernet, SD cards,
100W pass-through charging, and two external displays on Windows.
Cite the manufacturer pages and identify software limitations.

Record which first-party and third-party sources appear. Check every product claim against the cited page. If Claude cites a retailer rather than the manufacturer, determine whether the canonical product page lacks the relevant fact.

What Claude does not provide publicly

Anthropic’s public documentation reviewed here does not describe a merchant product-feed and native checkout program equivalent to OpenAI Commerce. Do not tell merchants to “submit products to Claude” without an actual official program.

The current merchant work is public evidence, crawl policy, citations, and any retailer application built with Claude’s API.
