Why AI Recommends a Competitor Instead of Your Store

The short answer

Diagnose whether a competitor is easier to retrieve, compare, verify, or purchase before blaming an invisible AI ranking.

A recommendation is the end of a chain

Suppose a shopper asks:

Recommend a compact 65W USB-C charger with two USB-C ports,
one USB-A port, and plug protection for travel.

Signal House sells such a charger. A competitor is recommended instead. That does not prove the competitor has a higher universal “AI rank.” The competing product may simply be easier to retrieve, understand, compare, or verify for this question.

Use four checkpoints:

Checkpoint Merchant question
Retrieval Can the public product page be reached and indexed?
Understanding Are wattage, port count, standards, and dimensions explicit?
Evidence Can the claims be supported by the product page, manual, and policies?
Purchase Are price, stock, market, and delivery conditions current?

Compare facts, not adjectives

Signal House currently says:

The ultimate fast charger for life on the move.

The competitor says:

65W GaN wall charger with 2 USB-C ports and 1 USB-A port.
Foldable US plug. 100-240V input. 118 g. USB-C cable not included.

The second page supplies the exact attributes required by the prompt. “Ultimate” does not help an answer engine decide whether the charger has a foldable plug.

Build a comparison sheet:

Required fact Your page Competitor page
total output vague 65W
port layout image only 2 USB-C, 1 USB-A
input voltage absent 100-240V
plug design absent foldable US
cable included unclear no
dimensions absent stated

This is a content and product-data gap, not proof of an algorithmic penalty.

Check three technical surfaces

The visible page is only one source. Ask whoever manages the store to compare:

  • the canonical product URL
  • Product structured data in JSON-LD
  • the product feed used by Shopify Catalog, Google Merchant Center, or another channel

Canonical URL means the preferred public address for the product. If the feed points to one market, structured data describes another variant, and the page redirects by location, a shopping system can receive conflicting evidence.

Repair the smallest decisive gap

For the charger, the first repair is not a new 1,500-word article. Add a compact specification table:

Maximum output: 65W
Ports: 2 x USB-C, 1 x USB-A
Input: 100-240V, 50/60Hz
Plug: foldable US plug
Weight: 118 g
Included: charger and travel pouch
Not included: charging cable

Then add a visible compatibility note explaining how output is shared when several ports are used. The limitation matters as much as the headline wattage.

Recheck the same question

Save the original prompt, platform, country, date, answer, and cited URLs. After the public page and product data are updated, rerun the exact question. A changed answer is an observation, not a permanent ranking.

If the competitor still appears, inspect external evidence such as manufacturer documentation, retailer coverage, reviews, and category authority. Do not manufacture backlinks or testimonials.
