Begin with the buyer’s behavior

Traditional product discovery often begins with a short query such as best commuter backpack. A conversational query can include the whole decision:

I need a waterproof commuter backpack under $180 that fits a
16-inch laptop, opens flat at airport security, and does not look
like hiking gear. Which products should I compare?

The merchant is no longer trying only to match a keyword. The product must supply enough facts for a system to answer several constraints at once.

SEO, AEO, and GEO do different jobs

SEO, or search engine optimization, helps a page become discoverable and understandable in search systems.

AEO, or answer engine optimization, makes a fact easy to extract into a direct answer. A clear specification such as “fits laptops up to 16 inches” is more answerable than “room for all your essentials.”

GEO, or generative engine optimization, focuses on whether a generative system can connect the product or brand to enough consistent, credible evidence to include it in a sourced explanation or recommendation.

These terms overlap. They are not official ranking programs, and no merchant controls the final answer.

Use the four-stage model

Stage What has to work
Discover the public page and product source can be found
Understand the product identity and attributes are unambiguous
Verify important claims have consistent supporting evidence
Recommend the product satisfies the buyer’s stated constraints

A product can pass the first stage and fail the second. A crawler may reach a page that says only “designed for modern life.” That is accessible but not useful for comparing laptop size.

Learn the minimum technical vocabulary

Structured data is machine-readable information attached to a webpage. Shopify themes often emit it as JSON-LD.

A product feed sends catalog records to a shopping platform. Shopify Catalog is Shopify’s structured commerce layer used by connected shopping experiences.

Metafields are Shopify fields for facts not covered by the standard product form, such as laptop capacity, waterproof rating, or care instructions.

Store owners do not need to code these systems, but they should know whether the same fact is visible, machine-readable, and current.

Turn the concept into a store task

Select one product and write:

  • the exact customer it is for
  • three buying constraints it satisfies
  • two reasons it may be unsuitable
  • what is included
  • the current price and availability

If you cannot answer those items from the product page, an AI shopping assistant may not be able to either.
